Though they are loath to admit it, we get this attitude from our English forebearers, especially soldiers. This is a paraphrase, I don't remember the exact words.

Let me tell the story. So there was a big grand Poobah funeral in India.

A soldier heard a woman cry out in distress as she was man handled towards the fire. She was the widdow designated to follow her husband. She objected, so she was 'helped' by relatives. The sargent called his fellows to stop this act. He also demanded to know what the locals were doing.

"We only act according to our culture," responded the major domo.

The sargent briefly looked over the scene.

"Then let both of us act according to our culture. In my culture, killing someoneoutside of self defense is wrong. You continue to try to kill that woman, every participant in that act will be hanged!"
