All right, I admit it: I squealed when I saw this trailer for the remake of Knights of the Old Republic. I mean, listen to it! How can a fan not squeal, just a little?
I will probably not like the remake. I can spare the time to think of at least one or two ways in which Disney/Lucasfilm will ruin the original story, and given the way they are treating Star Wars these are all too likely. This video by Eric July also fails to inspire confidence in the production.
So I will simply continue with the original game as I have up to this point. It may be worthwhile to indulge in a view of the remake’s graphics from time to time, when someone posts them on YouTube, but buying the revamped version of the game holds no true appeal. Not when the original is so much better.
Knights of the Old Republic still has a great degree of charm, despite the fact that it is so old it could be played on a potato (that is a friend’s description, not mine). Honestly, the graphics are the only thing from the original KOTOR that anyone could complain about, and the story makes such whining pointless. In Knights players are given a blank slate character whom they can play as they wish, choosing either the Dark or the Light Side of the Force during the course of the game, an exhilarating feature few – if any – current Star Wars games can boast.
Now, I am not a gamer, but I haven’t heard other fans speak lovingly of post-Disney SW games. Although Force Unleashed and KOTOR overshadowed it, there are fans who still remember playing Dark Forces when it came out. It is something of a predecessor game to KOTOR in that it let the player decide between the Light and the Dark Side. In some wa I envy those who got to enjoy that game when it was new. They were able to watch cutscenes with live actors in the characters’ roles, while later players in other games either had CGI characters or motion capture protagonists. It must have been expensive, and that may be the reason why it has not been done since. But darn, that was some impressive artistry employed in Dark Forces!
To be clear, I do not advocate giving money to people who hate you. And Disney/Lucasfilm clearly hates their fanbase, something their reaction to fan dislike of The Last Jedi made abundantly obvious. Along with Professor Geek, I also recommend not buying the new game or making too much of a fuss about it.
I am not above peeking at it to get an idea of what we could have had, but that just follows from what Mr. Winchester did with the trailer for the Netflix reboot of He-Man. The company may see my interest, but it will be short-lived. I recommend playing KOTOR, Force Unleashed, and Dark Forces – if you can get your hands on that one. Should that prove too difficult, find the cutscenes and watch them. The ones which follow the Expanded Universe canon total 23 minutes and change, so it would fill the slot for a half-hour TV show, taking up little of your time. Videos that include the alternate finale aren’t much longer, meaning you have no excuse to skip out on them if you want to see them. 😉
